I am so smart! S-M-R-T, I mean S-M-A-R-T!
Today wasn't that rough a day of work. One of our deadlines was pushed back from this Sunday to Monday, so I am hoping that I will get to enjoy one full day out of the office this weekend. We'll see how it plays out...
So I was a little bored this evening and decided to surf the internet for the news of the day. I came across this article and decided it would make for a good topic.

It's about time the courts took a stand against intelligent design. This has to be the dumbest movement in our public schools today. I can't believe that so many school boards across the country are pushing this curriculum on our children. Are we trying to promote ignorance and stupidity in our society? It has been understood in the science community for a long time that evolution is more than just a theory that has 'inexplicable gaps'. It's no wonder that the states that are leading the intelligent design movement are the ones that are performing the worst in America.
I have no problem with intelligent design. While I do not buy into the belief, I think this movement is a thinly veiled attempt to bring creationism into our public schools. This is something that should be taught in a religious school class. Our public schools are meant to teach our children the basic skills they need to excel in society, not to promote religious beliefs that cannot be tested by basic scientific prinicples. I hope that the Supreme Court rules appropriately when this case eventually reaches the brightest legal minds in our country.
Mpls Ju, as our resident scientist, what do you think?
Mouse/Mpls Ju - I appreciate the fighting for my attention. While Minneapolis is a lovely vacation destination in the winter, I must say that I can't say no to the 'red headed sluts'. Oh yeah, I like visiting Mouse too. Haha!

I have no idea what you're talking about gary? why do you automatically think "annonymous 2" is me?
and I am not a slut!
I agree, intelligent design shouldn't be taught in public schools. That should be reserved for parochial schools, if parents want their children to learn such theories.
Oh, and while we're at it, I think that those same parents should be able to take the tax money they pay into those public schools that their children AREN'T attending, and should be able to have that money go toward the school their child IS attending... voucher style, if you will.
roopdogg, does
"GOING TO NEED THREE SHOTS AT AN EASY FIELD GOAL IN ORDER TO WIN"
suffice?
This is a topic pretty near to my heart, Ginew. We talk about it quite a bit in my lab (it's also important to my boss).
My quick take:
Intelligent design is poor, poor science. Teaching children that there must by default be an "intelligent designer" (ie, God) because certain aspects of biology are "irreducibly complex" (ie, "too difficult for me to understand") is NOT science. There's NO hypothesis and it proposes no experiments. Showing gaps in one theory (evolution) does not by default support another theory (intelligent design). Proposing to teach this to impressionable children is proposing to undermine scientific education in America (which is already being surpassed by other countries).
Additionally, the idea of scientifically proving that there is a God seems to undercut the idea of faith as a central tenet of religion (at least, of Christianity). Religion is based on faith (faith the size of a mustard seed, you might say). Science is based on experiments. It doesn't make sense to me to mix the two.
Finally, I don't think that believing in one (science or religion) precludes the other. There are very religious scientists and very rational theologians. Although I'm not religious, I am sometimes jealous of people who are, since they seem generally more content and happier than I am.
Boy, today must be my day for long-winded comments which include Biblical references! I hope I haven't pissed any of Gary's loyal readers off with my spiel.
From a standpoint of a foreigner...it seems that Americans are sooo going down the drain. Not because of your educational system but by constantly reducing God to a mere theory...a hypothesis. Remember guys that your nation was built by the "belief" of the Higher Being. Just take a good look at your legal tender--it fully shows that America is not atheist (In God we Trust). Continue discounting God and I'm sure He will cripple your government into dust...and well you will question again where is He when bad times happen...I hope it wont happen but who knows...
