FINALLY!

It's been a while, but it's time for another softball post. We had our regular season finale against The Assholes (Son of a Pitch) today. Based on the past couple seasons, this game should have been for the regular season title. However, The Assholes had lost some of their good guys from last season and were nowhere near as good this year. Even though P&C had already locked up the regular season title, the playoff seeding would be impacted by our game. The standings were tight going into today's game:

1 - P&C (12-1)
2 - Beerbuddies (10-3)
3T - The Assholes (8-4)
3T - The Swarm (8-4)
...
7 - The Swinging Bunts (5-8)

With The Assholes holding the tiebreaker over The Swarm and The Swarm playing the Beerbuddies on the other field this evening, a lot was hanging on today's games.

Karma was on our side. P&C has lost 8 regular season and playoff games since 2003 (40-8 record). Of those 8 losses, 7 were on the dreaded "Picnic Field". Only one loss was on the "South Field", which is where we played today.

The game was definitely going to be intense since the other team was filled with assholes. Their captain was bitching about the umpire's large strike zone (he was one of those 'let's get this game over with' umpires). The umpire screwed us on two calls in the bottom of the first when he called runners out that were clearly safe, but we just let them go. In the second inning, there was a very controversial play. Tricki scooped up a bad throw at first base, but she came off the bag. With the ball in her right hand, she touched the base with her left (glove) hand for the force out. The ump ruled the runner out, and the other team FLIPPED out. Three of their players start arguing with the umpire that he got the call wrong. The argument lasted for a couple minutes, but no one was ejected. I was sure the ump got the call right, but RoopDogg disagreed when I discussed it with him afterwards. I tried to look up this play on the internet for a correct ruling, but I found nothing. Their captain continued arguing balls and strikes throughout the game. The ump had a big strike zone, but he umps a lot of games in this league and we all know what he calls. He's very consistent.

Both defenses played very well today. PhillyPhanatic was all over the place today at SS. One of the best games I have seen from our 'Franchise' player. We scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way. For the first time in seven tries over four seasons, we FINALLY beat The Assholes. I hate playing against that team. They do nothing but bitch during the game and they don't seem to have any fun on the field. It was a nice feeling to win today and a great wrap up to a 13-1 regular season.

The Swarm also lost today, so those teams are still tied for third place with one game left. Assuming both teams win their last games, we will probably play The Swarm in the semifinals. They are the only team to beat us this year, but they are a lot of fun to play against (and always give us a close game). I really wish they finished second or third because it would be much more fun to play a best-of-three championship series against them. Oh well. We'll play whoever we have to in the playoffs and try to beat them!
