Oh Captain! My Captain!
Please be good news. PLEASE BE GOOD NEWS!
Talk about bad karma. I buy a TV package to see more Red Wings games, and Lidstrom injures his knee 5 minutes into the game last night. If the news is bad, the Red Wings will be lucky to win four playoff games this year. Lidstrom has been arguably more valuable to the Red Wings than Steve Yzerman since 1995.

Lidstrom has not been more valuable to the wings since 1995. Both Yzerman and Fedorov were more valuable to the wings up until 2002, Yzerman especially. Yzerman was the wings best player in all 3 cups runs even on one leg when the team had 8 HOFers on it.
Actually Yzerman was the wings second best player in the 2006 playoffs behind only Zetterberg. Lidstrom is a great defenseman, but let's not give him too much credit. Yzerman, The Captain, is extremely underrated. He was far more valuable to the organization than Lidstrom. Without Yzerman the Wings would still be The Dead Wings.
Not sure who 'anonymous' is, but I said "arguably" because I could make just as valid of an argument for Yzerman as well, and I definitely believe that Yzerman was more valuable to the team OFF the ice. I think that without both Yzerman AND Lidstrom, the Red Wings have at most one Stanley Cup since 1955, if any. Both players have been vital to Detroit's success. I am definitely not underrating my childhood idol (Yzerman) with my comments about Lidstrom.
Having grown up playing ice hockey in SE Mich, and specifically playing defense, I have a huge appreciation for defensemen that can play 30+ minutes a game at Lidstrom's level. Lidstrom is on the Mt. Rushmore of great NHL Defensemen along with Bobby Orr, Ray Borque, and ?? (Doug Harvey, Chelios, etc)
I appreciate Lidstrom too and I think he's one of the greatest defenseman of all-time, but I also appreciate everything Yzerman did for the wings too. He may not be on the Mt. Rushmore of great NHL forwards but you have to remember there are more forwards in the NHL then there are defenseman. As for ice-time, all defenseman play more than forwards. Many time Kris Draper played more than Yzerman and actually most of the other defenseman played more than Yzerman, does that mean Draper and other defenseman were more valuable to the wings than Yzerman?
