The CCHA is not having a good NCAA tournament. Nebraska Omaha was absolutely pasted by Boston University today. UNO led 1-0 early, but BU tied the game late in the first and then scored SIX goals in the second period en route to a 9-2 victory. I knew BU was good, but damn did they embarass UNO. At least the students made the game fun. They are hilarious!
I was hoping that CCHA regular season champion Miami would look more impressive in the nightcap against Boston College since another bad showing would not give me much hope for Michigan tonight. Unfortunately, Miami had like 2 quality scoring chances all game and fell 5-0. Miami was so desperate that they pulled their goalie with 10 minutes left in the game to try and erasae a 3-0 deficit. About two minutes later, BC scored.
Given the poor conference showing, I was expecting bad things from Michigan. I missed the beginning of the game since I was driving back from Worcester, but we were already down 2-0 when I got home. Two stupid penalties resulting in two North Dakota goals. Then North Dakota added a shorthanded goal early in the second. Story of the season. 3-0 already, likely 7-0 by the time the game is over. It's going to be a long night for a Michigan team that probably doesn't deserve to be playing this weekend given their play since January.
It's a shame Michigan will likely lose tonight, because the winner will be playing Holy Cross, who just completed the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA hockey tournament by beating #1 Minnesota 4-3 in OT. It's the first time one of the two crappy auto-bid conferences sent a team past the first round of the tourney.
The highlight of the day is that I will get to see a much anticipated BU-BC hockey game tomorrow. It's the best rivalry in college hockey, and the arena will definitely be buzzing. GO BU!
